This Wednesday June 13th during our weekly Daiquiri Day’s of Summer at Bourrée we’ll be hosting a benefit to help get the Upstairs Lounge Second Line underway. We’ll donate all of the proceeds from our Fresh Fruit Daiquiri’s! Come to support the community, listen to great live local music, have a daiquiri (alcoholic or not!) eat some boudin & spread the love.
Up Stairs Lounge Second Line Fundraiser
In 1973, an intentionally set fire at a gay bar on the fringe of the French Quarter claimed 32 lives. This establishment, called the Up Stairs Lounge, was completely destroyed, and survivors struggled to express their grief. Homosexuality, at the time, carried great stigma, and no church in New Orleans would host a large public funeral for the Up Stairs Lounge dead–except St. Mark’s United Methodist Church on Rampart Street.
On June 24, 2018, the historic St. Mark’s church and the LGBT+ Archives will host a public, interfaith memorial service to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the tragic fire. The 5 p.m. service, in part a recreation of the 1973 memorial, will be followed by a Second Line parade to the site of the fire.
Join us in raising funds to support this Second Line effort, a public display of respect and recognition on behalf of all New Orleanians for the LGBT+ community and its contributions to our city.
*All proceeds from our daiquiri sales for the evening
will benefit the USL second line memorial
